Cevisama 2015: key trends in porcelain tiles

The Cevisama trade show is a key date in the design world: for 30 years it has been showcasing the latest innovations in ceramic and porcelain tiles, as well as bathroom equipment, natural stone products, glazes, manufacturing technology and more.

Appealing to a wide sector, beyond distributors of ceramic and porcelain tiles, this annual European exhibition is a celebration of ceramic products in the broadest sense and attracts a spectrum of visitors, from importers and manufacturers to architects and interior designers. Held over five days in Valencia, Cevisama 2015 attracted 75,000 people.

Inspiring trends for porcelain tiles

As leading UK distributors of ceramic and porcelain tiles we relish the opportunity to view such an extensive array of innovative and inspiring products in one all-encompassing creatively displayed exhibition. Here, we've put together the key trends for porcelain tiles, gleaned from Cevisama 2015, and how we see this translating into our future collections:

Supersized, uber-large format porcelain tiles

Large format tiles have gone extreme! Evolving manufacturing techniques mean that durable, vast porcelain tiles - up to 3m x 1m, and between 4-10mm thick - are a new addition which can be used for table tops and work tops or expanses of bathroom surface, as well as for floors. Whilst porcelain tiles with such large dimensions and slim profiles are unlikely to become a mainstream product they demonstrate that manufacturers are still pushing boundaries through innovation and this will be reflected in our forthcoming ranges.

Mimic nature with hyper-realistic porcelain tiles

Whilst it's not a new trend, per se, at this year's Cevisama we saw a deeper commitment to capturing the beauty, character and texture of natural materials, through marble, slate and wood-effect porcelain tiles. Highly polished porcelain tiles delivered a convincing marble trompe l'oeil effect for timeless appeal. Inkjet technology was also harnessed to create dimensional and very natural looking wood-effect porcelain tiles, available in plank and modular formats, and one product incorporated the look of a rustic sanded floor board complete with screw detail! Stone-effect porcelain tiles were displayed in versatile multi-sized plank-style formats which work together to add movement and variations in colour and pattern.

Hexagonal porcelain tiles

There was a notable upturn in the presence of hexagonal decorated porcelain tiles, especially in cut-down mosaic formats for feature walls; we learned that some of the manufacturers have invested in dedicated hexagonal presses which indicates that this could be a look that's here to stay.

Beyond porcelain tiles: soft cement

Besides an array of fresh and stylish porcelain tiles we saw soft cements blended together for industrial-style floor and wall tiles - ideal for chic warehouse loft development projects or edgy commercial interiors, such as bars or restaurants, where a rustic aesthetic is sought.
